Xanthorea and a stormy sky lens baby baby!

On of the most noticeable features of the Western Australian bush is the Xanthorea or grass tree also called a black boy because of its black burnt trunk. This is a Xanthorea flower spike which they seem to shoot out every few years much to the delight of every nectar loving creature.

Grass Tree Clearing…

Leica M9 f8 1/30s ISO 320 Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 – Gentle HDR

A small clearing in the forest is all the black boys need to to become dominant. The clear skies and harsh shadow are one of the curses that confront photographers in Western Australia especially in the hills above the pollution of Perth. So it was an oportunity to use a bit of ‘gentle’ HDR to develop this image.

Forest Grass Tree…

This is sort of a madonna and child shot, the trunk on the large Xanthorrhoea is approaching two metres while the small one in the foreground is about 500mm beneath the fronds and surrounding understory. The mother could quite easily be over 350 years old while the child just a mere 100. When I look around these ancient forests and consider the havoc we have created since white settlement I have do have to wonder if the child will ever reach the same age as the parent…
